A Reader Shares His Doubts About Global Warming

Last week, I received an email from a reader in Estonia (I was just as surprised we were big in the Baltics as you) who indicated that he used to be a believer in the global warming phenomenon until he “read some quite believable articles suggesting that man made Global Warming is a hoax.” Two of the pieces the reader pointed me to were authored by Robert Brisnmead, who, evidently, is a devoted climate change denier. IEA Chief Economist Says Peak Oil Will Come in 11 Years

According to The Guardian, Fatih Birol, Chief Economist with the International Energy Agency (IEA), has candidly revealed his position that world oil demand will start outpacing supply “around 2020.”

Peak Oil — that most controversial and elusive of concepts. Everybody seems to have their own opinion. There are experts on both sides who alternately claim we have at least 30 years before we reach it and those who claim we’ve already reached it.

So, for a top-level official in an agency with the respect of the IEA to state that we’ll reach an oil supply plateau around 2020 is pretty substantial news — especially considering that his own agency has previously stated that the date was 2030.

The issue of premium vs regular gas has always been a controversial one. Oil companies have long claimed that their premium blends provide more power or efficiency than regular fuel. The problem is that real world results tend to be be very mixed. While it's true that using a higher octane fuel can allow an engine to generate more power and/or run more efficiently, the engines have to be calibrated to take advantage of these fuel properties. Many modern engines with sophisticated electronics are capable of doing this, but not all.

According to AutoCar one machine that does benefit is the Vauxhall Astra VXR. While Saturn dealers only get the normally aspirated 1.8L Astra, the VXR version gets a turbocharged 2.0L engine. In testing with premium and regular gasoline, the engine produced 17 hp on premium while also getting a mileage bump from 22 to 25 mpg (18.3 to 20.8 mpg (US)). Turbocharged engines like this definitely have an advantage because they can run higher boost levels compared to normally aspirated engines which have fewer parameters to adjust. The question is, does a 13 percent bump in efficiency outweigh the extra cost of the fuel and the extra energy to refine it? That question remains unanswered.

Daimler to bring lithium batteries in-house through JV with Evonik

It looks like Daimler AG doesn't plan to rely solely on suppliers for lithium ion batteries going forward. Traditionally, automakers prefer to keep most powertrain development in-house as one of the primary differentiators from other manufacturers. As these companies move forward into hybrid and electric drive vehicles, the battery pack is becoming an ever-more integral part of the powertrain.

Daimler has launched a joint venture with Evonik to develop lithium ion batteries. Daimler will apparently own 90 percent of the JV. Evonik already manufactures electrodes and separators for batteries and recently purchased a stake in Li-Tec. Evonik's electrodes are based on lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide chemistry. So far, there is no indication of when the JV will start producing batteries.

Nuclear Plant Credited for Saving Endangered Crocodiles

The National Wildlife Federation has credited the Turkey Point nuclear power plant in Florida for helping save endangered crocodiles by creating a makeshift sanctuary for the reptiles within their 6,800-acre network of canals for the past 30 years.

In 1985, only 19 crocodiles lived around Turkey Point, but now around 400 live among the canals, which are used to cool to nearby nuclear power plant. The species was changed from endangered to threatened in 2007 by the US Fish & Wildlife Service.

Is Kennedy Behind Latest Cape Wind Delay?

I grew up in Massachusetts where the Kennedys—for all intents and purposes—are treated like royalty. I do hold Senator Ted Kennedy in very high regard for all the excellent work he has done in his 46 years in the U.S. Senate. That is why I am especially troubled by the senator’s long-standing opposition to the proposed offshore wind farm in Massachusetts. As news broke late last week that there might be yet another delay in the eight year battle to get Cape Wind approved, I had to wonder if Kennedy’s hand was somehow behind it. And according to reports, that is at least plausible.

As I reported yesterday**, Minnesota Rep. Jim Oberstar sent a letter to Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen asking for a delay in the Guard’s final recommendations on Cape Wind. Acting as Chair of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Oberstar’s letter demanded a delay for public comment on the project’s potential impact on marine radar.

Well, apparently it worked.

It is true, as we wrote earlier today, that GM is cutting back on production launches and bringing new technologies to market, but not all is dead and gone at the Ren Cen or, for that matter, over in Ann Arbor, the home of the University of Michigan. 50 GM engineers will start taking U of M classes in January to learn more about electric drive technology.

According to the Ann Arbor Business Review, the 50 engineers will work on alternative powertrain technology that is designed to get more plug-in, standard hybrid, and BEV knowledge into GM's brain bank. Currently, about 25 students are getting masters degrees in energy systems at U of M, a program that was started a year ago. The GM engineers will take courses online and Robert Kruse, GM's executive director of global vehicle engineering for hybrids, electric vehicles and batteries, told the AABR that the program shows GM is "committed to the electrification of the vehicle." Better late than never.

A tipster dropped us a note to let us know that XtremeGreenProducts is lining up dealers to start selling its electric two-wheelers in the near future. In spite of the name, there doesn't appear to be anything particularly "extreme" about these machines. However, they do have some pretty decent specs that may give them a leg up on Vectrix.

The motorcycle is listed as having a 4 kW hub motor and a 2.88 kWh lithium ion battery pack. The battery is claimed to give a 95 mile range and a top speed "approaching" 65 mph. The motorcycle has a fairly moderate 266 lb mass.

The motor scooter is expected to come in two models differentiated by the motor and battery capacity. Like the motorcycle, both scooters use hub motors with 3.0 and 3.5 kW outputs, respectively. Those motors are also fed by lithium ion battery packs with 2.4 kWh and 3.6 kWh yielding 50 and 75 mile ranges. No word on pricing yet. Thanks to John for the tip!

Development of the Chevrolet Volt may be continuing full-speed for now at GM but that program is the exception rather than the rule at the General. Everywhere else in the company, programs and introductions have been delayed. The combination of excess inventories of existing vehicles resulting from slow sales and cash flow issues have caused vehicles such as the Saturn Vue and Two-Mode hybrid and the plug-in version to be delayed. If GM were to start building the new strong hybrid Vue they would have to pay suppliers for the parts, something they are trying to avoid right now.

Similarly, the plug-in requires engineering hours that would have to be paid for. It's ironic that politicians want to force the Detroit automakers to build greener vehicles but, until the Big Three get a cash infusion, it can't happen. Similarly, even more efficient versions of conventional drivetrains are being pushed back. GM has two new engines coming that were supposed to be shown to media this coming week. In light of the current situation that briefing has been canceled. It's not clear if the introduction of the engines themselves has been delayed, but odds are that that will be the case.

Question: I have been on the hunt for eye-makeup remover that isn’t filled with chemicals, and I simply can’t find any (and am starting to believe it doesn’t exist.) I know, I know, a lot of you just use soap and water to remove eye makeup, but I find that that doesn’t work for me. What can I say? Robin

Question: I’m wondering if any of the soap-and-water-only people you mentioned actually wear eye makeup, which tends to require more than just soap and water to remove gently.

One step up on the crunchy scale’s using olive oil, which’ll really, really greasify your eyelids. I don’t recommend that option.

One more step up’s one I’ve tried: Aubrey Organics Herbessence Makeup Remover. I wouldn’t recommend this stuff to anyone. Basically, it feels like rubbing pure oil on your eyelids — meaning you may as well just use olive oil if you’re gonna go for this option. Unlike pure olive oil, however, this remover contains a lot of other stuff besides oil that bump up to 2 its safety score on the Skin Deep cosmetic safety database (2’s still a “low hazard” score, but olive oil gets a 0).

What I use now: Earth Science Eye Make-Up Remover. This fragrance-free, paraben-free product is a clear gel that’s non-greasy and does its job quite well. And the remover also scores a 2 on Skin Deep.

I’m fairly happy with Earth Science, but it seems there are quite a few eye makeup removers on the market that score a 0! I’m now curious about trying those, though I’d rather not run into another bad Aubrey-like experience.

A bottom up democratic Socialist Workers Party?

Some of us like Emmerdale but the big soap opera on the left is the Socialist Workers Party, John Rees has been kicked off the top table and is responding with a bit of polemic.

My problem with the SWP, much as I have a lot of time for John Rees as a human being (we are both from Chippenham, so solidarity with those from Wiltshire is my sentiment), is that it is about a small group of full time leftists running a top down centralised political party, the emphasis is on building the party not on achieving radical change.

Politics on the left must go beyond Leninism and frankly I know plenty of Leninists who are more user friendly than the SWP.

The assumption from everyone outside the SWP is that what ever they get involved in is a means to recruitment not an end. So Green Party, anarchists, Labour left, non labour left, we all distrust them to a women and a man.

My approach is the opposite, the Green Party, Green Left and the EIN are instruments for promoting social justice, ecology, animal liberation, workers control, open source economies, anti-capitalism, etc.

I have big disagreements with the Communist Party and the FI but both organisations in the UK are not simply building themselves up, they are a bit more reflexive on where they have gone wrong in the past too.

John Rees picks up on an internal SWP document from Neil Davidson that seems more in tune with my thinking:

Neil suggests that if there were a less professional leadership that included those who hold down jobs and which was drawn from different parts of the country we would be more able to deal with these issues. He is more generally critical of a ‘top down’ and anti-democratic culture of debate in the SWP that closes off necessary discussion prematurely.

More years of the locust, I think we should be told!

Looks like I wasn't the only one who wondered about the brake lights on AC Propulsion's eBox. AC Propulsion's Tom Gage responds to my post the other day with not only an answer to my question about if the hard decel that takes place when the regenerative braking kicks in triggers the brake lights, but also with a visual aid. Yes, he said, yes they do. His exact words were:

Of course the eBox turns on the brake lights during regen. We'd have a lot of bashed in rear ends if we didn't. Still it's a good question. In fact we heard it so often in test drives that we include an LED on the eBox dashboard that illuminates when the brake light comes on.

So, there you have it. One more green car mystery solved. Thanks, Tom. Now, what's next?

Tony Gosling argues that he has been targetted because of his research noting:

I use the term 'gay mafia' to describe gay rights campaigners who overstep the mark and to emphasise that no social group or community is immune to criticism. Once children reach sexual maturity as far as I'm concerned it's their affair.

As I said on the phone I'm proud to be attacked by Harry's Place as it is trying to make its name as a site that attacks civil liberties campaigners.

I don't think it's a coincidence that this criticism is timed to coincide with a documentary I'm working on exposing the police and government lies over the 7/7 London Bombings... and calling for a proper public enquiry with all the various witnesses evidence made public.

He also notes: 'At last I've made it on to stage 2 of Ghandi's analysis of how the British Establishment deals with tellers of unpopular truths. Such as the total lack of scrutiny of the 7/7 attacks.'

If it was a false flag operation, I guess the conspirators would have little to fear from someone as 'eccentric' as Tony. I am guessing he thinks that anyone else who got hysterical in the press as a 'Green Party candidate' (even though at the time he did not represent the party) about the 'gay mafia' would not be suspended unless they were seriously on to the illuminati masonic bilderberg network.

I think the facts speak otherwise. Incidentally I have been attacked by Harry's Place, does it mean anything more than they disgree with me?

Here is the Bristol Green Party statement on his suspension:

On October 28, it was brought to the attention of the Green Party that a Bristol member had made homophobic comments in a newspaper interview.

In doing so, the member gave the inaccurate impression that he was a current Green Party election candidate and speaking on behalf of the party, thereby bringing the party as a whole into disrepute.

The comments the member made were not in any way in accordance with Green Party policy, and constituted completely unacceptable behaviour.

Bristol West Green Party, as the local party of which he is a member, took immediate action, passing the same day (October 28th) a joint resolution with Bristol East Green Party, which called for the matter to be fully investigated and whatever action deemed necessary as a result to be taken.

Once it had been established that the comments attributed to the Bristol member were not a misrepresentation of his views, the Bristol East and West Green Party business meeting of November 25 then requested formally in a second resolution that his Green Party membership be suspended by the national party pending the outcome of a disciplinary process against him. A disciplinary hearing will follow.

The Green Party’s list of core principles, to which all members must adhere, states:

Core Principle #5 (of 10 – see [policy.greenparty.org.uk] for full list):

A healthy society is based on voluntary co-operation between empowered individuals in a democratic society, free from discrimination whether based on race, colour, gender, sexual orientation, religion, social origin or any other prejudice.

The Green Party’s Manifesto for a Sustainable Society states:

MfSS – Section RR502 – (full ‘Rights and Responsibilities’ chapter available at: [policy.greenparty.org.uk]

RR502 Young people have the right to be brought up to understand that they may experience homosexual or heterosexual feelings or both, and that either or both are to be welcomed as having potential to enrich their lives and those of the people around them.

The Green Party’s Constitution also states (in Clause 10 iv):

Elected members and other representatives have a responsibility to promote the policies of the national and local green parties, as expressed in the MfSS and national, regional and local manifestos. Where they do not agree with Party policy and publicly state their own position, they should at the same time state and explain the position of the Green Party.
